School liaison officer strives to meet families' educational needs

By Robert Goetz Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Public Affairs

For as long as she can remember, Angela Green has wanted to work with children.

She has pursued her dream, receiving an education specialist degree and working at child development centers at three Air Force bases while raising two children of her own.

Now she has an opportunity to impact the education of military children who attend schools at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph.

Green, a longtime Air Force spouse, began work last week as the school liaison officer at the JBSA-Randolph Military and Family Readiness Center. She previously served as school liaison officer at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, where she received Air Education and Training Command Inspector General professional performer recognition in November.

"I'm happy to be at JBSA-Randolph," she said. "I will do the very best I can so that I can be a great resource for our military families."

As school liaison officer, Green said she will serve as a "link between local schools and military families.

"School liaison officers help ensure a smooth transition for military families as they move from place to place," she said.

Green's accomplishments in her 10-month stay at Goodfellow AFB included starting an Exceptional Family Member Program parent support group and partnering with numerous community service organizations to find programs that benefit military families.

Green, a Louisiana native, graduated from high school in 1986 and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., where she met her future husband, Steven Green.

After they were married, he enlisted in the Air Force and she put her college graduation dream on hold for nearly 20 years while moving with him to his duty stations throughout the United States, including JBSA-Lackland and JBSA-Randolph during the last decade of his Air Force career.

When she and her family moved to San Antonio upon her husband's assignment to JBSA-Lackland about a decade ago, Green became a lead teacher at the Randolph Child Development Center.

It was during this time that she resumed her education, earning a bachelor's degree in business and organizational management with a specialization in early childhood education from Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, in 2006. She later received a master's degree in business and organizational management with a specialization in human resource management from Ashford in 2010 and an education specialist degree from North Central University in Prescott, Ariz., in 2013.

While working at the Randolph CDC, Green enrolled in a management training program and was out-placed to Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, where she worked as assistant director of the base's CDC. She assumed the same position at Goodfellow AFB, but applied for and was soon hired as the base's school liaison officer.

"I knew the school liaison officer at Eielson, and I was fascinated with his job," Green said. "When the position opened at Goodfellow, I knew it was an ideal opportunity for me."

Now she's looking forward to serving JBSA-Randolph military families.

"I'm ready to get out in the community and partner with school officials and teachers to meet military families' needs. I want to reach as many families as I can," Green said.
