Lackland comic heading to LA's Laugh Factory

By April Blumer 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

Lackland is home to the Funniest Person in South Texas.

In a six-minute standup routine, Staff Sgt. Walter Campbell proved he was the best of the 15 comics who had prgressed to the final round of competition held Monday evening at the Rivercenter Comedy Club in downtown San Antonio.

Sergeant Campbell works in the 345th Training Squadron as a materiel management instructor.

"Otherwise known as 'supply,'" quipped the 32-year old.

When the winner was announced, Sergeant Campbell's first thought wasn't about how he'd taken the top honor or how hard he'd worked for the title, it was, "Aww man. My lips are ashy!"

The winning bounty included a  waist-high trophy, a $750 cash prize and a week of shows at Los Angeles' Laugh Factory.

Sergeant Campbell, who took second in the competition last year, hasn't set the date for the trip yet.

Lt. Col. Chester Teel, the 345th TRS commander, was in the audience at a recent comedy event for technical school students where Sergeant Campbell was serving as the master of ceremonies.

"He's a guy that likes humor," said the commander. "He did a great job of tying the tech school phase system into his act, which was great for this crowd."

Capt. Jose Sarduy, assigned to the 84th Fighter Squadron at Laughlin AFB, was also at the 345th TRS's fundraising event and a competing comic March 26. He placed second in the competition.

Sergeant Campbell is auditioning March 30 for the NBC reality show, "Last Comic Standing."
