VARSITY LADIES SOFTBALL: Blue Jays bash Lady Warhawks

By Raymond V. Whelan 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

A grand slam home run over the center field fence by pitcher Shannon Piggot during the bottom of the third inning helped the Lady Blue Jays beat the Lackland Lady Warhawks last week.

Altogether, the Blue Jays socked 25 hits - six for extra bases - as they downed Lackland 18-3 during San Antonio Parks and Recreation Spring Softball action March 29 at the Alva Jo Fischer Memorial Softball Complex.

The Lackland dugout was very subdued after the game.

"We weren't connecting tonight," said Megan Schafer, the Warhawks third baseman.

Schafer walked and scored during the top of the first inning after the Blue Jays committed an outfield error. Also for the Warhawks during the first, shortstop Jackie Hudock walked and scored later on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Christy Hayes. During the Lackland third, first baseman Catrina Harden reached base on a fielder's choice and scored later on another fielder's choice.

Lackland drew 10 walks against the Blue Jays. However, they only got three hits. Schafer singled during the second inning. Both left-center fielder Tina Cooper and Hayes hit singles during the third.

While the Blue Jays batted during the third, Hayes made one putout and threw out two base runners at second base.

Harden hit the ball sharply toward the mound during the fifth. However, Piggot stopped the smash at shoe-top level. The Blue Jays' defense stopped Lackland with two double plays, one during the second, the other one during the fourth.

After the loss, the Warhawks were at 3-2 in the SAPAR YH-1 division.
