Lackland Air Force Base, Texas –
The Lackland Warhawks Men's Varsity Softball Team lost their second game of the season earlier this week in the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Spring Softball League.
CFA Bomb Squad belted 29 hits as they rocked the Warhawks 27-15 at the Alva Jo Fischer Memorial Softball Complex.
Clearly, CFA had improved much since they lost 19-6 to the Warhawks last month, and they hit the ball with authority throughout the game.
"It was a rough game," said Eric Culver, Warhawks coach. "There were too many errors and not enough hitting. When you play like that, people will beat you."
Lackland scored during the top of the first inning on a solo home run by first baseman Paul Hackett. However, the Warhawks saw their slim lead disappear during the bottom of the first, when CFA bashed 13 hits and scored 10 runs.
The Warhawks put together their best inning during the top of the second, as they scored nine runs on six hits. Lackland catcher Scott Shirley knocked a two-run homer to tie the score at 10.
CFA responded with six runs on six hits during the bottom of the second. A grand slam homer by catcher Raul Quiroz helped CFA go up 16-10.
After the Warhawks hit into a double play and went scoreless during the top of the third, CFA added five more runs during their half of the inning.
Two Lackland errors, including one outfield mistake with two outs, helped the Bomb Squad increase their lead to 21-10.
During the top of the fourth, Lackland scored five runs to reduce the CFA lead to 21-15.
Right-center fielder Sean Chaney led off with a solo home run. Pitcher Mike Jenkins walked. Left-center fielder Eric Schafer reached base on an infield error. Shortstop Tracy Oliver doubled to drive home Jenkins and Schafer. Shirley came up next and smacked his second home run of the game.
Even so, the Warhawks could not disarm the Bomb Squad during the home fourth, when their rivals tallied six more runs.
A bases-loaded single by extra hitter Allen Cross drove in three runs. Cross crossed home plate on a double by shortstop Chris Riley. Second baseman Jeff Tandry followed with a two-run homer.
Lackland failed to rally during their final at-bat during the top of the fifth.
Left fielder Rick Selvidge popped out. Chaney singled. Then, a hard smash by Jenkins deflected off CFA pitcher Randy Zett to Tandry, who flipped the ball to Riley for the force at second base on Chaney. Riley fired a bullet to first baseman Matt Trepkowski to put out Jenkins. The game ended after Hackett flew out to right field.
Altogether, Lackland had 16 hits. Oliver went 3-for-3, and Chaney went 3-for-4.
The Warhawks are now 2-2 in the SAPAR Men's C Division.
Their next game is April 17, 7 p.m., at the Alva Jo Fischer Memorial Softball Complex.
