Eagles soar over Yellow Jackets

By Tony Perez 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

Power forward Garrett Wimsatt hit a putback with 38 seconds left in overtime Jan. 15 to give the Stacey Eagles a one-point lead.

Wimsatt's basket proved to be the difference as the Eagles defeated Sabinal High School, 63-62, in their first district home game of the season.

The Girls Varsity team was also victorious, defeating the Sabinal Yellow Jackets, 60-42.

Still, it was the Boyss Varsity that provided the roller-coaster ride of excitement.

After Wimsatt's basket, point guard Vernon Sparks forced a steal, only to turn it over. Seconds later, shooting guard D.J. Sanders produced another steal only to see the ball stray out of bounds, giving the Yellow Jackets one more chance to win.

With 11 seconds left, Sabinal High School put up an errant jumper that was rebounded by shooting guard Mike Loar. He could not corral the ball, however, giving the Yellow Jackets one more shot at the buzzer that bounced harmlessly off of the rim, preserving the victory.

Wimsatt led the team with 16 points, while small forward David Clark chipped in 15. Loar also scored 13 points in a game that was marked by numerous turnovers by the Eagles.

After enjoying a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Eagles saw their lead turn into a six-point deficit in three minutes. With two and-a-half minutes left in the regulation, the Eagles scored quickly and played smothering defense to force the overtime.

The girls' team did not provide the same blood-pressure rising drama, but produced several impressive individual performances.

The Lady Eagles used a stifling halfcourt defense, which featured all of their players ambushing the passing lanes.

The results were hard to argue with. Point guard Shana Holmes finished with 22 points, 11 steals and 11 rebounds.

Shooting guard Domini Davis chipped in 20 points and four steals.

Small forward Stephanie Glatt had three steals and a season-high 10 rebounds to go along with her four points.

Cordia Harvatin scored 13 points had four steals and nine rebounds, including one steal in the second quarter that ended with her taking the ball coast-to-coast for the basket.
