RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
A field of 72 golfers participated last week in a ceremonial tournament as part of end-of-command proceedings for Gen. William R. Looney III, Commander, Air Education and Training Command.
The tournament was unique in that no scores were recorded and no winner was announced.
"The general just wanted everyone to come out and have fun, with no pressure on who was winning," said Billy Thomas, AETC Chief of Distinguished Visitor Transportation. "We just relaxed and had a great afternoon."
The 18-hole event took place June 27 at Randolph Oaks Golf Course as the outgoing commander presided over a tournament staged in his honor. After a 7:30 a.m. registration, players were divided into foursomes and play ensued.
The participants each played their own ball, with no scramble format and no mulligans issued, finally gathering in the veranda area outside the pro shop for a meal of steak and trimmings during the late afternoon.
Weather conditions for the tournament were windy, but the course itself was in great shape, according to participants.
"There was no pressure and it couldn't have been nicer," said Chief Master Sgt. Pete Casiano, AETC Public Affairs functional manager. "I came to Randolph in May and haven't had the opportunity yet to get out and play much golf so I really enjoyed it. Everyone seemed to."
General Looney, a 10-handicap golfer, was feted with a change of command ceremony yesterday and is retiring after three years as AETC Commander. The general is wrapping up a 36-year career with the Air Force.
