LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
For the 33rd year, San Antonio area families can brighten the holidays for Air Force basic trainees through Operation Homecooking. The program gives local families the opportunity to share their traditional Thanksgiving Day with basic trainees.
Through the years families have opened their homes, recognizing many of Air Force basic trainees are away from home for the first time. This year, about 4,000 trainees are eligible to participate in Operation Homecooking. Last year, more than 1,400 local families hosted more than 2,400 Air Force members for Thanksgiving dinner.
Families within a 30-mile radius of Lackland may invite two trainees by calling 671-5453, 671-5454 or 671-3701. Calls will be taken weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Nov. 3.
This will be the seventh year trainees can also be requested via the Operation Homecooking Web site at www.lackland.af.mil/homecook.
Local area and out-of-town relatives who have family members in basic training may make by- name requests. Hosts must pick up trainees at the Basic Military Training Reception Center, Bldg. 7246, between 7 and 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.
Only trainees who entered basic training before Nov. 17 are eligible. All basic trainees must be returned to the base by 7 p.m.
