Intramural football set for season openers

By Thomas Warner Staff writer

A new season of intramural football begins Wednesday at Grater Field with four games.

The defending champions, Air Force Personnel Center, will be one of eight teams playing opening night games. Several preseason games were held Wednesday and Thursday evenings as teams familiarized themselves with the league structure.

"We will have good participation again this year," said Rikk Prado, Rambler Fitness Center sports director. "The preseason games allowed us to get the players involved and also allowed us to get our officials going."

Referees and game officials are provided by the Greater Randolph Officials Association, which oversees officiating for all sports events on base.

Mr. Prado said 10 teams are registered for the league and games will take place each Wednesday evening at Grater Field.

"Four games each week will leave two teams that don't play, thus the byes," Mr. Prado said.

Competition involves eight-on-eight, but roster space is unlimited, he said. There is no space for additional teams, but individuals can contact their unit sports representative to be added to an existing roster.

"If their sports representative is unavailable or can't be reached, they can call me here at the Rambler Fitness Center and I will try to place them with a team," Mr. Prado said, adding that at least seven players were required for a team to be allowed to start a game and avoid a forfeit.
