Base readies for external ESOHCAMP audit

By Hilda Villela-Davis Natural Resources chief

Randolph Air Force Base will undergo a triennial external Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health Compliance Assessment and Management Program, or ESOHCAMP, audit Dec. 1-5.

Air Education and Training Command personnel will visit and evaluate the Environmental Management System's effectiveness in complying with federal, state, local and Air Force environmental laws and regulations.

The audit will culminate with a small outbrief for the wing commander and senior leadership.

ESOHCAMP is a tool in the audit and corrective-action phase of the EMS cycle to:

1. Help ensure the 12th FTW is in compliance with the various environmental rules and regulations governing Air Force operations, and
2. Ensure that environmental considerations are in the forefront of our daily routines and decisions

ESOHCAMP covers a broad range of technical topics and helps set future courses of action; it provides the opportunity to showcase all of Randolph's efforts toward environmental stewardship.

But, there are a number of steps everyone can take to put the best foot forward:

· Familiarize yourself with the wing commander's ESOHMS policy
· Ensure hazardous materials are properly labeled and stored
· All hazardous wastes are properly identified and disposed of
· Guarantee that no recyclable materials end up in the trash
· Make sure that those who work with hazardous materials have HAZCOM training annotated on their Form 55 (that supervisors maintain)

To dispose of hazardous materials, contact Erik Christianson by calling 652-5666 or in Bldg. 37 Hazardous Waste Accumulation Facility. For help identifying if something is hazardous or how to dispose of it, call the "Hazmart" at 652-5681.

Having hazardous materials is approved so long as people follow the proper procedures for purchasing, labeling, storing and training.

If everyone bands together, we can make Randolph shine.
