12 SVS temporary lodging facilities expand for larger families

By Sean Bowlin 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

Contractors are renovating 22 family housing units into three-bedroom temporary lodging facilities that will give 12th Services Division the ability to provide adequate temporary housing to military personnel with larger families.

Mike Porter, 12th Service Division assistant lodging manager, said Air Force Services Agency funded this $1 million-plus renovation because there was an un-mandated, yet obvious need for larger families to have a place to stay while moving in and out of Randolph.

Currently, Randolph only has one-bedroom temporary lodging facilities and according to Mr. Porter, there were large, existing homes to renovate instead of building expensive new homes from the ground up.

"Many of our families previously had to share TLF single rooms," Mr. Porter said. "Now, they'll have their own room in a three-bedroom unit. Mom and Dad can watch TV upstairs while the kids watch it in the living room. It's like living in a house and not a hotel. There's more breathing room."

The extensive renovations to the TLF's include new flooring, carpeting, cabinets, sinks, bathroom fixtures, furniture, and appliances, said Mary Eddy, 12th Services Division lodging manager.

"We basically went into them and cleared out everything but the walls," she added.

Mr. Porter added that when the renovation is complete, the homes will include other amenities such as flat screen, LCD televisions in living rooms, equipped with cable and high-speed internet access. In addition, four of the new homes have been designated for families with pets and will have fenced-in backyards.

"In today's Air Force, pets are family members, too," Mr. Porter.

Families can stay in the temporary facilities for up to 30 days. They cost $52 per night or $62 for a pet-friendly unit and are all located between Fourth and Fifth streets near a centrally-located group of swing sets for children.

Mr. Porter said families coming or going to Randolph who will stay in the homes form a great first impression in renovated, larger quarters.

"If you get a new Airman with a larger family, he'll be motivated to do a good job because he'll feel he's well-taken taken care of," Mr. Porter added.

Construction on the TLF's began a year ago and renovations are scheduled to be finished in July.
