DECA announces child scholarship recipients

By Mariah Kilbourne 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

The Scholarships for Military Children program recently announced seven Team Randolph family members as winners of a $1,500 scholarship.

Paige Carpenter, Daniel Culpepper, Ashley Hughes, Dustin Miller, Adriene Nixion, Javier Williams and Michelle Wrights each received the scholarship that is initiated by the Defense Commissary Agency and administered by the Fisher House Foundation.

"The commissary system has long supported promotions with a focus on education," Ruby Ervin, store director, said. "The Scholarships for Military Children, which is funded by the vendors and manufacturers who sell groceries every day, makes the premier military benefit even more valuable."

The scholarships were open to qualified sons and daughters of U.S. military ID card holders. Graduating high school seniors, as well as students currently enrolled in a four-year program were eligible to apply.

A minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstration of community involvement were among the factors considered by the independent scholarship management committee that selected the winners. The committee also considered an essay written on the question, 'What would you place in a time capsule to help people opening the capsule in the next century understand about military life today?'

Col. Brian Killough, 12th Flying Training Wing vice commander, scholarship sponsor Derk Soto, Ms. Ervin and parents were present to celebrate the accomplishments of this year's outstanding winners.

"Community involvement is what the Randolph Commissary is all about, and the Scholarships for Military Children is one way to show we care," said Ms. Ervin.
