LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
With the increased availability of housing on Lackland and the Lackland Training Annex, the Lackland Independent School District has established attendance eligibility policies for the 2010-2011 school year.
Dr. Burnie Roper, Lackland ISD superintendent, said the school board's policy has always stated that only students who live on base could attend Lackland schools. Over the past three years, however, the school allowed transfers while base housing was being privatized.
The current school year policy allows only students who live on Lackland or LTA to attend Lackland Elementary School and Virginia Allred Stacy Jr/Sr High School. Those schools include students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. However, the Lackland ISD school board policy for attendance eligibility does allow for exceptions. The exceptions are:
· Students who were approved transfer students as of Dec. 18, 2009. According to board policy, these students are eligible to apply for a transfer to attend Lackland schools each year under established criteria until they graduate or their parents have a permanent change of station.
· Students who move off base during the school year may apply for a transfer to complete the remainder of the year. If the student is not in high school, he may only attend until the end of the year.
· Students who move off base while in high school may apply to finish the rest of the school year. If a student completes the ninth, 10th or 11th grade, he may apply to remain until graduation.
All transfers are considered based on the availability of space and instructional staff. Transfer approvals are not guaranteed, according to the policy.
