Lackland sets spring cleanup days

In conjunction with Earth Day/Month at Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland spring cleanup days are April 4-8.

According to Scott Daniel, 802nd Civil Engineer Squadron, the cleanup is a great opportunity for units to take "pride and ownership in their facilities."

For the cleanup, the base is divided into zones. Units are asked to manicure, clean and maintain their work area, including the areas around their facilities, up to 50 feet or the street curb, on the designated day for their zone:

April 4: Zone 1, Lackland Training Annex

April 5: Zone 2, Lackland training side, north of Truemper Street

April 6: Zone 4, Lackland training side, south of Truemper Street

April 7: Zone 5, Lackland permanent party side (east of Military Drive)

April 8: Zone 6, Security Hill

Cleanup focus areas include:

· removing grass and weeds from mulch beds and rock gardens as well as cracks in sidewalks and parking lots;

· removing and replacing dead shrubs and plants;

· removing broken or rotten tree branches;

· painting or touching up walls, railings, posts and storage sheds;

· pressure washing entryways and sidewalks;

· performing general trash pickup and area cleanup; and

· replacing burned out light bulbs.

For landscaping projects, Mr. Daniel encourages people to preserve already maintained areas and eliminate non-maintained landscape projects by removing dead plants and border material and returning the area to grass.

Mr. Daniel said the 802nd CES is eager to assist units with their cleanup efforts.

The squadron will provide tools, supplies, materials, and support needed to make the day a success. Items are available for checkout from the self help store including power washers, cordless drills, hand tools, hedge and weed trimmers, shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows, weed killer, wet and dry vacuums, paint supplies and other miscellaneous clean-up supplies.

The store, open year round, is in Bldg. 5497. For more information, call the store at 671-2339.

Industrial support equipment, including Skid loader support, a 1.5 Ton Truck with Tommy Lift, back hoe, dump truck, street sweeper, and pickup trucks, are also available. These items must be coordinated at least two days prior to the cleanup day. For more information, call 802nd CES Heavy Repair Supervisor Ray Cabrera at 671-3288.

Everybody is reminded to keep safety in mind during clean-up efforts.

Use operational risk management techniques when planning each task; use safety equipment including gloves, hearing and eye protection and stay hydrated.

Additionally, use proper techniques when lifting heavy items.
