Dental pulls off undefeated flag football season

By Jose T. Garza III 502nd Air Base Wing OL-A Public Affairs

For quarterback Ricky Guajardo and the rest of his squad, practicing during the hot summer hours in the off season paid off.

Guajardo led the 59th Dental Squadron to an 8-0 regular season record with a three-touchdown performance, defeating the 559th Medical Group 19-0 Tuesday in the Division I Flag Football season finale.

Guajardo came out gunning, throwing for 70 yards, before connecting with wide receiver Nakeithian Phillips on a five-yard touchdown pass, giving Dental an early 6-0 lead on its first drive.

Despite throwing two interceptions in the game, Guajardo connected with touchdown passes to wide receivers Darrell Green and John Grey.

"They deserve it," Guajardo said about the team's undefeated season. "The team worked real hard for it."

As good as Dental was on offense, its defense, led by safety Michael Smith, forced three turnovers in the game.

"Defense played strong as a unit," Smith said. "I've got faith in these guys. We got each other's back out on the field. What they do up front allows me to do what I can do on the back end."

Guajardo shared the same sentiments as Smith about Dental's strong defensive play. The team only allowed 12 points all season long.

"Our defense has been the backbone of our team," the quarterback said.

Guajardo said going undefeated in the regular season is fine, but if they lose in the playoffs, then the undefeated season is all for naught.

"I know my team is hungry, and they are going to come out and play harder in the playoffs. I expect nothing but perfection. So far, they have lived up to what I've expected from them."

The quarterback expects nothing short of a championship. "I don't expect us to lose," he said.
