JBSA installations collaborate on this year's energy fair

By Robert Goetz 502nd Air Base Wing OL-B Public Affairs

Randolph Air Force Base's Kendrick Club is the setting next week for the Joint Base San Antonio Energy Fair, an opportunity to learn about the latest in energy conservation technologies and to talk to energy experts in the public and private sectors.

The energy fair, an Energy Awareness Month event that takes place Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature a variety of vendors that specialize in energy-saving products, as well as representatives from CPS Energy, San Antonio Water System and the Texas A&M Center on Applied Technology, and energy teams from Randolph, Lackland AFB and Fort Sam Houston.

The Randolph energy management team has planned the base's own energy fair for the last two years, but this year's event is a collaborative effort of the JBSA installations.

"The Joint Base San Antonio energy office worked with the Defense Technology Institute and W.W. Grainger Inc. to plan the energy fair," Ruben Ramos, Randolph utilities manager, said. "We're expecting about 30 vendors this year."

Bruce Dschuden, 902nd Civil Engineer Squadron resource efficiency manager, said the event will cover a range of energy services and products such as lighting, insulation and HVAC - heating, ventilation and air-conditioning -- systems. A seminar on light-emitting diode lighting is also planned.

"It's a great forum for people to talk about energy," he said. "Everybody who shows up will benefit from it."

The event will also feature giveaways, door prizes, light snacks and refreshments.

The energy-efficient technologies that will be showcased at the energy fair will appeal to business owners, including construction contractors, and to homeowners, as well as to base leadership, who will see opportunities for energy savings.

"People will be able to ask questions on how they can save energy and will see the latest technologies," Ramos said.

The fair is part of an effort during Energy Awareness Month to spread the energy conservation message at all JBSA installations. Randolph kicked off the month with the debut of Sunny GreenWatts, the energy awareness mascot who is making appearances at various functions. Randolph has also begun a six-month competition that is encouraging base personnel and residents to reduce their energy consumption.
