Air Force Association banquet honors Airmen, civilians in S.A. area

By Robert Goetz Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Public Affairs

The Alamo Chapter of the Air Force Association will pay tribute to more than 100 Airmen and civilians from major organizations in the San Antonio area at its 2012 Combined Awards Banquet next week.

Now in its 26th year, the Alamo Chapter's flagship event takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland's Gateway Club. Brig. Gen. Theresa Carter, JBSA commander, will present the awards.

"We're proud of the award recipients' accomplishments and hope that all their families, friends and colleagues will come out to support them," Randy Coggins, Alamo Chapter president, said. "Our goal is to make this a memorable event for our award winners, as well as other special guests and visiting dignitaries."

The banquet honors the memories of Joe Kellogg and Charlotte and Carlton Loos, lifelong AFA volunteers who were known for their dedication to the Alamo Chapter.

The Joe Kellogg Blue Suit Awards program recognizes outstanding contributions by active-duty Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members throughout the San Antonio area. Airmen in seven categories - Airman, ranks E-1 to E-4; NCO, ranks E-5 and E-6; Senior NCO, ranks E-7 to E-9; Company Grade Officer, ranks O-1 to O-3; Mobilization Augmentee; First Sergeant; and Top Recruiter - will be honored.

Second Lt. Sarah Hoh, JBSA-Randolph Company Grade Officers Council member and banquet organizer, said commanders of the area's major organizations select award recipients. Some areas of accomplishment that are worthy of recognition are job knowledge, technical skills and leadership qualities as applied to an Air Force problem or combat situation; leadership in social, cultural or religious activities in the military and/or civilian community; and ability as an articulate and positive spokesperson for the Air Force.

Leadership also selects winners of the Loos Civilian Awards, which are given to civilians in three categories based on their pay grades.

Today is the deadline for tickets, which are priced at $20 for E-6, O-3, GS-8 and below and $25 for all others. Tickets are available online at www.alamoafa.org and by calling 977-2011.
