JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas –
The 902nd Force Support Squadron Youth Programs has a cure for the summertime blues.
An array of summer-long and week-long camps providing a variety of fun, educational activities will be offered starting June 4.
"Our camps keep the kids busy," Andrea Black, Youth Programs coordinator, said. "They give them something to do and look forward to, as well as a chance for peer interaction. And they still get a wonderful educational experience."
Two 12-week camps are planned, both running from June 4-Aug. 24. The school-age camp is for 5- to 12-year-olds and the teen camp is for 13- to 18-year-olds.
Chris Kiser, school-age coordinator, said activities will include field trips, swimming, bowling, museum and theme park outings, and even San Antonio Missions baseball games.
"Having all these kids here makes it an exciting time," he said. "It's an adventure for them."
Some of the children's destinations include Landa Park in New Braunfels and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, as well as an apple orchard and peach farm in the Hill Country.
The teen camp will include field trips and theme park outings, as well as community service projects, Keystone Club activities and a Teen Talk program.
Youth Programs is also planning a series of week-long camps that will focus on a variety of activities, from hip-hop and sports to science, cooking and art.
The Missoula Theater Camp, scheduled for July 16-20, has openings for 60 5- to 18-year-olds, who will conclude their week with a performance of "The Pied Piper" in the base theater.
Amanda Ozuna, Youth Programs sports director, said the sideline sports camps will expose participants to a range of "sports that aren't typical, such as water polo, fencing, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee and team handball." There are three-hour sessions for 9- to 12-year-olds and 13- to 18-year-olds.
"People think they have to be athletic, but we have professionals who teach them the skills they need," she said. "It's a really fun camp. It's all about getting involved and having something new and fun to do."
Black said one of the pluses of the summer program is the trained staff.
"We have a highly trained staff," she said. "They're here to have a good time with the kids and make sure they're safe."
