JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas –
While business sectors around the nation tighten resources to emphasize the bottom dollar, the Airman and Family Readiness Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph plans to help JBSA community members stay on top of their money by offering a financial preparedness course 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at building 693.
The class, which is called "Financial Readiness," will provide a brief overview of spending plans, goal setting, credit, credit reports and scores, the Thrift Savings Plan and basic investing, Felicia McCollum, 902nd Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant, said.
All Department of Defense cardholders, including civilians, Air National Guard and reservists are eligible to attend.
The class is partly designed to encourage attendees to become resourceful with their personal funds.
"Typically, when we complete spending plans with individuals, we most often find that the areas they can cut back in are food-spending and entertainment," McCollum said.
"People can fairly easily curb this spending by planning meals, eating at home, making a list when they grocery shop and buying in bulk," Robert Griffin, 902nd FSS Exceptional Family Member Program coordinator at the A&FRC, said. "Families can also save money in entertainment by hosting a movie or game night at home and looking for free events happening around the city."
For Airmen, the course will also address topics such as financial readiness for deployment and steps to financial independence.
"Financial Readiness" is held monthly at the A&FRC, with the next workshop scheduled 2 p.m. April 23.
