The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is warning Army communities about the dangers of "blue lotus," also known as "blue Egyptian lotus" or "blue water lily."
Although marketed under various labels as a natural aquatic plant with various health benefits, blue lotus is on the DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement List and these products are often laced with synthetic cannabinoids.
While legal in many countries, including the United States, use of blue lotus is prohibited for U.S. service members both overseas and stateside.
Possession, importation, exportation, and distribution of any blue lotus product is in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and Army Regulations and can lead to criminal and/or administrative sanctions.
Beyond risking your career, these products are unregulated and may contain unknown ingredients that can cause adverse health effects such as paranoia, anxiety, slurred speech, chest pain, and seizures.
Individuals with credible information concerning the illicit use or distribution of blue lotus within the Army community are encouraged to contact Army CID at www.cid.army.mil/tips or by submitting an anonymous tip by scanning the QR code on the associated flyer.
