JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas –
It’s Mission Monday! Meet Michael Springer, program manager for the Utilities Privatization Program at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.
He and his team support 11 facilities and manage 24 utility systems within the scope of the utilities privatization portfolio. They ensure electricity, water, wastewater and gas systems are fully operational at military installations.
“What we do keeps the lights and heat on, the water flowing and toilets flushing for everyone on the military installation,” Springer said. “We have decreased power, water and gas outages considerably, which benefits the military installation and mission moving forward.”
We asked Springer, an Air Force retiree who enjoys golfing, fishing and spending time with family, to tell us more about himself and his work.
Briefly tell us why you joined civil service after your Air Force career?
With my skill set and knowledge in the construction field, I thought I could make a difference joining civil service and contribute to the goals of the U.S. Government.
Why do you serve and what keeps you serving?
I joined the United States Air Force to serve my country. I now work as a civil servant for the same reason.
What do you love about your job?
I work with the best people. We care about what we do and each other. I love what I do, and it helps keep life on military installations first rate.
When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
Knowing what I do matters, not only to the warfighter but also to those who support the warfighter.
How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities?
By keeping the families on the installations cool in the summer, warm in the winter and just overall helps the warfighter concentrate on the mission.
