JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
The Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Commissary recently received a $10,000 check from a cereal company for an innovative product display, beating out all 179 continental U.S. commissaries.
The Post Cereal Display competition was in recognition of Purple Up for Month of the Military Child, which was in April. The Month of the Military Child contest allowed commissaries from across the nation to show their support for children who go through so many changes as their parents serve their country.
Under the guidance and creativity of Aretha Queen, JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Commissary Officer, the commissary won first prize for their Post Cereal Display and a donation of $10,000, which will go to the 502nd Force Support Squadron for JBSA child and youth programs.
"We're thrilled to be recognized for a display that gives back to our JBSA community," Queen said of the award.
The JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Commissary highlighted their military children by allowing the children to be a part of the display during the MOTMC giveaway held on April 25, 2024.
Mickey Chandler, OSCWebco sales representative, presented the ceremonial check of $10,000 to Queen and U.S. Army Col. Marie F. Slack, 502nd Force Support Group commander, at the commissary July 18.
Chandler wanted to do something special for JBSA’s military children, and working with the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston commissary team, decided to create a “Military Family Backyard” in the store with items that children enjoy.
“I am incredibly proud of and grateful for this team’s creativity and hard work putting together a winning display. It’s fantastic that the proceeds will support our JBSA Child and Youth programs,” Slack said. “Our JBSA community takes care of its own, and this effort truly highlights that commitment.”
