New OMB policy requires all agencies to use .mil or .gov URLs

By Charlotte Ann Hu Defense Media Activity, Web Enterprise Business (WEB.mil)

For the American people, the use of the .gov domain is a critical indicator that they are accessing official information, services, and communications. When .gov domains are used for websites, people have greater confidence that the information on those sites is authoritative and trustworthy.

A new Office of Management and Budget memo published Feb. 8, 2023, updated requirements for federal executive branch agencies for the registration and use of .gov domains, via OMB Memorandum 23-10.

Some details:

  • Effective on the date of this memorandum, agencies must use government domains (i.e., .gov or .mil) for all official communications
  • Agencies can no longer waive the dot gov or dot mil website requirement. Only OMB can provide a dot com waiver going forward
  • All non-dot mil or dot gov websites must be reported to OMB within 180 days
