Learn to manage risk during the extended Labor Day weekend

By Terry L. Todd JBSA-Lackland Safety Manager

Labor Day weekend typically marks the end of summer and it’s a time to take a well-deserved break to relax and recharge one last time before temperatures start falling.

Unfortunately, this weekend has also historically been associated with increased mishaps.

With more holiday travelers on the nation’s roadways, there will likely be a spike in traffic collisions and fatalities. Following these tips – courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation and American Red Cross – can help keep you and your family safe:

  • Make sure your vehicle is in good condition.
  • Get plenty of rest prior to starting your journey.
  • Take breaks while driving and avoid long-distance driving without breaks.
  • Allow plenty of time to get to your destination, reducing the impulse to speed.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
  • Use caution in work zones. There are lots of construction projects underway on the highways.
  • Don’t follow other vehicles too closely.
  • Let someone know your plan.

No matter what activities you have in store for this holiday weekend, Joint Base San Antonio members are encouraged to have a plan and utilize the wingman or battle buddy concept.

If planning to leave the local area, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. If possible, avoid traveling alone.

If planning to consume alcohol, TxDOT urges those who choose to go out and celebrate to plan ahead for a sober ride before any drinking begins. Use the wingman philosophy, watch over each other, know your limits, have a plan, and designate a driver.

Additional potential hazards this weekend might include cooking on open flames and water mishaps.

To lessen the dangers of your holiday weekend, take the proper steps to ensure risk management is a part of all your activities.

Also, if you’re going to be out in public, remember COVID-19 is still among us. Protect yourself and your family, so mask up or back up.
