Air Force Voting Assistance Officer training workshop planned for March 23

By Steve Elliott 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 802d Force Support Squadron Military & Family Readiness Centers now plan and administer the Air Force Voting Assistance Program. In conjunction with the Federal Voting Assistance Program, or FVAP, a congressionally mandated Voting Assistance Officer, or VAO, training workshop is being offered.

The workshop is from 2-4 p.m. March 23 at building 2797, 3060 Stanley Road at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston

This is an ongoing program to assist military personnel, family members and other citizens of voting age to register and vote either at the polls or by absentee ballot. The program’s mission is to provide assistance for all elections, regardless of when they are held, with special emphasis on the period prior to general elections.

This workshop is oriented toward VAOs and persons providing voting assistance at U.S. embassies and consulates, military installations, and American citizen organizations overseas. The two-hour workshop is an interactive training session and provides timely information about the absentee registration and voting process for uniformed service members and their families and resources critical to prepare VAOs to effectively perform their duties.

VAOs are critical to the success of voting assistance programs. The knowledge and effectiveness of a VAO, combined with a comprehensive voting assistance plan, may determine whether a citizen understands how and when to participate in the election process. They are responsible for providing accurate, non-partisan voting information and assistance to citizens of all 55 states and territories who want to exercise their right to vote.
