Cyberspace Engineering Group displays mission at Joint Base Andrews Air Show

JBSA-Lackland – Personnel from the 38th Cyberspace Engineering and Installation Group (CEIG), Tinker AFB, Okla. displayed an Air Force Cyberspace information booth at the Joint Base Andrews Air Show, Md. 15-17 Sep 2017. Both military and civilian personnel from the 38 CEIG interacted with an enthusiastic public of all ages to explain the Group's mission - deliver a resilient infrastructure to further operations in and through the cyberspace domain. Special visitors to the 38 CEIG booth included Secretary of the Air Force, Honorable Heather Wilson, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General David Goldfein, and Commander, Air Force Space Command, General Jay Raymond.

The 38 CEIG is part of the 688th Cyberspace Wing headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, under 24th Air Force and Air Force Space Command. Squadron personnel under the 38 CEIG that provided the air show display were from the 85th Engineering Installation Squadron, Keesler AFB, Miss. and the 38th Engineering Squadron, Tinker AFB, Okla.

One of the major attractions at the booth was the 85 EIS’s new Radio Frequency Spectrum Survey van. Mr. Alton Richards, 1st Lieutenant Enjoli Morales, and Mr. Peter Bui, 85 EIS ensured their equipment was properly displayed and provided demonstrations of their frequency detection and analyzers in the display van. The equipment allows its operators to survey an identified air space, identify both authorized and unauthorized frequencies operating within the air space, identify signal strength, and determine if any frequency interference is detected. These capabilities are critical to protect military operations using the Radio Frequency spectrum and eliminate potential interference or denial of service.

The 38 ES provides engineering support and technical guidance for the AF global network. “This is the first time our organization has hosted a booth at an air show. Our teamwork with the 85th EIS, Air Force Space Command and the Joint Base Andrews air show team made our display an outstanding success," said Mr. John Carpenter, senior Cyberspace Systems Integration engineer, 38 ES. Mr. Carpenter’s extensive network design experience allows him and the 38 ES team to consult mission partners on AF Network enterprise-wide applications. Newly-assigned engineer, Mr. Tracy Nguyen, 38 ES, also answered public questions and provided explanations on network design and performance analysis.

The team answered questions from curious children, teenagers, and adults who displayed interest in learning more about Radio Frequencies and Air Force cyberspace careers.
