JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Department of Defense ID cardholders will have an opportunity to get a jump start on their New Year’s fitness resolutions at a pair of annual events in the coming weeks at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph.

The Rambler Fitness Center will host the Holiday 10-Mile Bike Ride at 8 a.m. Saturday at Eberle Park and the Resolution Run 5K at 8 a.m. New Year’s Day at Airmen’s Heritage Park.

“The bike ride sets the tone for the Christmas holidays,” said Tommy Brown, Rambler Fitness Center recreation aide. “It’s also a way to get an early start on your New Year’s resolutions.”

Riders will start at Eberle Park, head south on Perimeter Road past Randolph Oaks Golf Course and continue north to a location near the JBSA-Randolph Medical Clinic, where a turnaround point will be established for the same route back to the park.

Last year, 15 riders participated in the event despite rainy weather, Brown said.

“We’re expecting more participants this year,” he said. “We have a broad age range; some people even bring their children.”

Runners and walkers at the Resolution Run 5K on New Year’s Day will start at Airmen’s Heritage Park and continue on Perimeter Road past the east gate to the turnaround point north of Eberle Park, Brown said.
“There were 40 to 50 people at last year’s Resolution Run,” he said. “It’s a great way to start the new year.”

Brown encourages participants at either the 10-Mile Holiday Bike Ride or Resolution Run 5K to sign up 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Participants will have an opportunity to pick up giveaways at the conclusion of the events.

The new year also marks the beginning of the Rambler Fitness Center’s annual “New Year, New Program” campaign, which encourages participants to attend 24 group aerobic classes at the center and accomplish 70 miles of running or walking and 36 miles of biking during the year.

Those who wish to join the self-monitored program can pick up tracking cards at the fitness center’s front desk.

“New Year, New Program” also offers giveaways once participants reach their goals.

“We try to encourage people to start a new program,” said Christian Wasylchak, Rambler Fitness Center facility technician. “We like to see them establish goals and go after them.”
