Texas Governor delivers proclamation, swears in future San Antonio Sailors during Austin Navy Week
March 29, 2017 — The capital of Texas hosted members of the U.S. Navy during Austin Navy Week, March 18-24, which coincided with the Rodeo Austin and Stock Show. As part of Navy Week, Navy Vice Chief of Information Rear Adm. Robert Durand, joined by Sailors and future Sailors were invited to the governor’s mansion to receive a proclamation from Gov. New combat-related devices authorized for Army decorations
March 29, 2017 — The V device worn on Army Commendation Medal and other awards, stands for “valor.” The device was authorized decades ago for wear on Army ribbons. The V device is still around, but joining the V now are two new devices: the “C” and “R” devices, where C denotes “combat” and the R means “remote.” Both are described fully in Military Personnel Message 17-095, titled “Implementation of Department of Defense Guidance for the Newly Established ‘C’ and ‘R’ Devices.” That message was published March 15. ... The first rotation of Beyond the Horizon, or BTH, exercise personnel arrived in Belize March 25. BTH is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored exercise that U.S. Army South manages. Chargé d'Affaires Adrienne Galanek, from the U.S. Embassy in Belize, spoke with incoming U.S. service members on the importance of the exercise to the continuing relationship between the U.S and Belize March 25 at Price Barracks, Belize. Following her brief, Galanek was given a tour of the BTH17 operations base and its facilities.

AETC Spirit of Hope award winner driven by passion for volunteerism

An Airman models one of the first uniforms designated for women who joined the Air Force in 1948 during a living history fashion show Oct. 7, 2016, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Gateway Club. JBSA-Lackland hosted a reunion of the Women in the Air Force, a term for women who joined the Air Force between the years of 1949-1976. The WAF was founded in 1948 out of the Women’s Armed Service Integration Act, which enabled tens of thousands of female service members to find jobs in the Air Force. In 1976 women were accepted into the service on an equal basis with men.
