MEN'S SOFTBALL: Warhawks complete three-peat

By Raymond V. Whelan 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The Lackland Warhawks Men's Varsity Softball Team wrapped up the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Spring League season with another trophy this week.

Lackland won their third-straight SAPAR spring championship as they soundly defeated Concordia 21-2 May 16 at the Alva Jo Fischer Memorial Softball Complex. The Warhawks finished the schedule with an 8-2 record.

"We had a great time," said Eric Culver, Warhawks coach.

Lackland was leading 11-2 through the end of the second inning.

During the first inning, left-center fielder Kane Mueller tripled and scored. Second baseman Dale Back, catcher Steve Reichert and pitcher Tracy Oliver each singled and scored.

The Warhawks pounded Concordia with long balls during the second stanza. Mueller, Back and Reichert hit back-to-back-to-back home runs with no outs at the beginning of the frame. Oliver doubled and scored on a single by shortstop Sean Chaney. Left fielder Eric Schafer belted a homer with Chaney on first. Right fielder Jeremy Hall added another solo home run.

From that point, the outcome of the contest was never in doubt.

Through the remainder of the game, the Warhawks produced a merry-go-round of base runners as they tallied 10 more runs.

Rich Burley replaced Back during the third inning. He reached base on a fielder's choice and scored during the third. He walked and scored during the fourth inning.

Reichert doubled and scored during the third.

Both Oliver and Chaney singled and scored during the third; they both reached base on an error and scored during the fourth.

Schafer singled and scored during the third.

Both extra hitter Ted Ayon and left-center fielder Rick Seldridge singled and scored during the fourth.

Also for Lackland, first baseman Tom Roomsburg went 2-for-4, and third baseman Lance Harris went 1-for-4.

Altogether, the Warhawks had 26 hits.

For Concordia, both second baseman Chris Kircher and pitcher Greg Entzenberger singled and scored during the second. However, Concordia only had six hits, and they committed four errors.

Now, the Warhawks are preparing to enter the SAPAR Summer League, tentatively scheduled to start June 14.

Speed and defense will be the key factors to continued success, Culver said.

"In games where we don't hit, we really have to rely on that," he added.
