Stacey High School finishes well in meet

By Tony Perez 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The sudden cold front and precipitation Oct. 22 did not stop Stacey High School from hosting the District 38 cross country meet.

Parents and school members showed up as early as 8 a.m. to begin preparing for the event.

With rain slowly stopping around 9 a.m., the 10 teams still had to face a muddy course that featured many rolling hills and temperatures in the mid-50s.

"It was probably the hardest race we've had all year. It was freezing and the wind didn't help either," said Stacey High School runner Stephanie Glatt.

By 11 a.m., 15 minutes before the meet began, wind gusts were up to 21 mph, causing the temperature to feel 10 degrees colder than it was.

The meet was held at Lackland Outdoor Adventure Center.

The race started 45 minutes later than expected because Rock Springs High School faced car trouble and coaches decided to wait to allow all participants to race.

Both the men's and women's races were ceremoniously started by Lackland Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. David Splitek.

Kelsey Bruce, from Brackett High School, began the 3,200-meter course very strong, sprinting to a huge lead. However, Glatt cut Bruce's lead nearly in half midway through the race, which was also the part of the course with the most hills.

"I'm usually strong with the hills, so that probably helped me out," Glatt said.

With about 200 meters left, Glatt broke into a sprint and caught Bruce less than 5 feet from the finish line to take first place.

"I didn't expect to have one of my best races today, but I tried to keep a positive attitude about it," Glatt said.

It was the third time the two had raced, with Bruce coming in first in the other two meets.

"She beats everyone she races, so this time I was just determined to catch her," Glatt said.

The women's team had three runners finish in the top 10. Tawney Wimsatt finished in 10th place with a time of 14:15. Megan Benoit finished in fifth place with a time of 13:58 and Glatt finished with a time of 13:13.

The Stacey High School women's team came in second place with 45 points. Harper High School took third with 48 points, and Brackett High School took first place with 38 points.

The 5,000-meter men's race did not have the same last-minute heroics of the women's race.

The Stacey team did an exceptional job of using each other for pacing, with each runner following in a pack formation.

As a result, Stacey High School had three runners finish in the top 10 and five runners in the top 12.

Darrell Sanders came in seventh with a time of 18:56. Josh Knippel came in sixth with a time of 18:55 and Carlos Delgado came in fifth with a time of 18:52.

The Stacey men's cross country team came in first with 41 points. Rocksprings High School came in second with 67 points, and Harper High School came in third with 92 points.

The top three teams will move on to the regional meet which will be held Nov. 3 at Brooks City-Base.

State finals will be held in Austin on Nov. 10.
