Base kicks off AFAF campaign

By Mike Joseph 37th Training Wing Public Affairs

Team Lackland began its annual Air Force Assistance Fund campaign March 9, with the base-wide fundraising event concluding April 17.

This year's goal is to raise $207,423 for the four societies that fall under the AFAF umbrella.

Capt. Angela Sanders, a Team Lackland campaign coordinator, has seen firsthand how the AFAF helps those in need.

"People have worked for me who couldn't afford to go home and be with loved ones who were dying," she said. "AFAF contributions to the Air Force Aid Society have helped them get home and say their good-byes."

Captain Sanders said monies raised during the AFAF campaign also help members' car care needs, childcare for PCS moves or programs to educate and teach members to be better parents.

Donations support these organizations:

The Air Force Aid Society, a worldwide emergency financial assistance, education assistance and base-level community enhancement programs for Airmen and their families.

The Air Force Village Indigent Widow's Fund in San Antonio, a lifecare community for retired officers, spouses, widows or widowers and family members.

The Air Force Enlisted Village Indigent Widow's Fund in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., associated with Elgin Air Force Base. Indigent widows and widowers of retired enlisted 55 or older are provided with rent subsidy and other support tools.

The Gen. and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, which provides financial and rent assistance to indigent widows and widowers of officers and enlisted personnel in their own homes and communities.

Monies for the campaign are raised via donations or fundraisers organized by a group, squadron or flight. Heading the base fundraising efforts for this year's campaign are:

Team Lackland: Captain Sanders, Master Sgt. Chad Neubarth and Master Sgt. Bryan Ledlow;

59th Medical Wing: Capt. Latasha Dunn and Master Sgt. Jason Micklewright;

37th Medical Group: Master Sgt. Kim Southworth, Tech. Sgt. Reginald Wilson and Staff Sgt. Shannon Donahue; and

737th Training Group: Lt. Matt Houser and Tech. Sgt. Stephen Larson.
