NAMRU San Antonio conducts Quantitative Detection of Pain Study

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas - The members of the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio’s Electrodermal Activity Sensing for Quantitative Detection of Pain study team include (from left) Dr. William D’Angelo, Jacqueline-Rae Villanueva, Cmdr. Drew Havard, Katie Geary, Cmdr. Rachel Werner, and Stephanie Speaker of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Electrodermal activity is fluctuations in the electrical characteristics of the skin, typically controlled by the sweat glands. The study is being conducting to create a machine learning algorithm that will distinguish between pain and anxiety to help dental care providers provide optimal care to their patients.
