Rising water from the previous night's rain caused problems for one driver on Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on March 12. According to the Texas Governor's Division of Emergency Management, 6 inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. Additionally, water displaces 1,500 pounds of weight for every foot that it rises. It can take less than 2 feet of rushing water to carry off most passenger vehicles, including pick-up trucks and sports utility vehicles. Drivers should avoid attempting to drive through flooded roadways. Water covering roads may be hiding washed-out bridges or gouged-out roadbeds.
