‘Take Back Our City’ event targets sexual violence

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, Army North (Fifth Army) commanding general, provides the keynote address at the "Take Back Our City/Night" event at San Antonio College April 11. He stressed the importance of partnerships between the military and universities to help end to sexual violence. The event was part of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month at Joint Base San Antonio.

JBSA leaders recognize contributions of military children at proclamation signing

Joint Base San Antonio leaders recognized the contributions of military children and families during a proclamation ceremony designating April as Month of the Military Child at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston March 29. The ceremony was held in the Texas Room at the U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) Headquarters. Signing the proclamation were (from left)  Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, ARNORTH commanding general; Capt. William Leonard, Navy Medicine Education and Training Command deputy commander; and Brig. Gen. Laura L. Lenderman, JBSA and 502nd Air Base Wing commander. Also attending the proclamation signing were five students from the Fort Sam Houston Independent School District and their parents.

ARNORTH CG Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan receives Distinguished Eagle Scout Award

U.S. Army North Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan (second from left) was presented the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award at the Boy Scouts of America, Alamo Area Council Brunch Feb. 13 in San Antonio. Buchanan, who attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1973, was presented this award for exceptionally distinguished service in his military career and to the community. Only one in every 1,000 Eagle Scouts has been awarded this high honor. Pictured (from left to right) are Mike Crownover, National Eagle Scout Association Chairman; Lt. Gen. ARNORTH leaders emphasize importance of SHARP program

Soaring Valor flight brings World War II veterans, high school students together for New Orleans trip

A World War II veteran holds his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance at the conclusion of a sendoff ceremony at the San Antonio International Airport Oct. 17 which saw 40 WWII veterans take off for a trip to New Orleans to visit the National World War II Museum. The Soaring Valor program, sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation, helped send the veterans and 40 high school Student companions from Dallas, to the museum.

ARNORTH communications building dedicated to local World War II hero

Staff Sgt. Fred Garcia, a U.S. Army telephone and telegraph line chief who fought in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during the Battle of Rapido River in Italy, was honored during a building memorialization ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Sept. 7. Garcia was a San Antonio native and a direct descendent of the Padron family, one of the original 16 families who founded the city. Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan (center, left), commanding general, U.S. Army North, joins (from right) Kenneth Garcia, Wayne Garcia and Diana Garcia-Schulze, all children of the late Staff Sgt. Fred Garcia, in the unveiling of the commemorative plaque to be mounted at the entrance of the U.S. Army North (5th Army)  communications building, the Staff Sgt. Fred L. Garcia building.

Army Reserve medical personnel improve readiness serving local communities

Spc. Kodjo Koukoua, an Army Reserve optical laboratory specialist assigned to 7252nd Medical Support Unit, is processing new eye prescriptions for eyeglass fabrication at Escontrias Early Childhood Center in Socorro, Texas. Koukoua is one of approximately 50 U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Army Soldiers who are working in partnership with the Texas A&M Colonias program to provide medical care to El Paso County's underserved colonias population.

Green Beret missing for 47 years laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

Members of the Fort Sam Houston Honor Guard  carry the casket of Army Maj. Donald G. Carr into the Gift Chapel at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston May 11. The Special Forces officer was lost while on a forward air controller mission July 6, 1971. Carr's remains were found in 2014 and verified in 2016. He was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full honors.

In his opening remarks at the Joint Base San Antonio Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Summit at the Sam Houston Community Center at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston April 19, Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) commanding general, said service members need to build a culture of trust in preventing and stopping sexual assault in the military.

Army North continues to assist in Puerto Rico

Members of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, Reserve and active duty, along with Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, U.S. Army North commander; Brig. Gen. José Reyes, Dual Status commander; and Caguas Mayor Hon. William Miranda Torres, distributed food and water to residents of the neighborhood Borinquen, Oct. 14. Reyes, Buchanan and Marín handed over provisions to the people who were grateful for the help received and were seriously affected by Hurricane Maria.
