Carloads of fun, learning

Cars entered in Cub Scout Pack 651's Jan. 29 pinewood derby came in all shapes and themes.

Although pinewood derby cars must use the same wheels and axles, and meet a strict length and weight requirement, the remaining construction is as varied as the child's imagination.

According to Ernest Roy, Bear Den leader, some cars incorporated real bullet heads as intake manifolds. Others looked more like transformers from Saturday morning cartoons. One looked like a large order of french fries.

The top three overall fastest cars belonged to Kenny Mars from the Webelos Den, Riley Naylor from the Wolf Den and Jonathan Roy from the Bear Den.

The top two in each den were Jordan Wooden and Joshua Ball (Tigers); Riley Naylor and MacKenzie Wooden (Wolf); Jonathan Roy and Eric Patch (Bear); and Kenny Marrs and William Mattingly (Webelos).

While healthy competition is found in scouting, the program works to instill values such as trustworthiness, loyalty, obedience, friendliness and bravery into their members. Teamwork, integrity and citizenship are among the Scout's 12 core values.

Boys age 5 though 9 are invited to join Lackland's Pack 651 Cub Scouts. Pack 651 meets every Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Lackland Elementary School cafeteria.

The annual Blue and Gold ceremony, which celebrates the birth of scouting, is scheduled for Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. in Bldg. 3450. Current Scouts and those considering joining Boy Scouts are invited to attend.

For enrollment information or for questions regarding attending the Blue and Gold ceremony, call Master Sgt. Don Wooden at 289-3386 or 2nd Lt. Cullie Patch at 262-2700.
