Wing fun run fosters fit-to-fight Airmen

By Airman 1st Class Katie Hickerson 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

The 12th Flying Training Wing will conduct a wing-wide 1.5-mile run April 27.
More than 1,000 people, including group and squadron active-duty personnel and civilians, are expected to participate in this event.

"This will be our first-ever wing run," said Col. Richard Clark, 12th FTW commander. "We are planning on holding a wing run regularly to help develop fit-to-fight Airmen, as well as build esprit-de-corps within Team Randolph."

Wing personnel will form up in front of the Rambler Fitness Center on the day of the run. Colonel Clark will kick off the event with his opening comments at 6:15 a.m., followed by a 10-minute warm-up stretching session led by Rambler Fitness Center director, Kenneth O'Neal.

The wing will take off at 6:30 a.m., and will traverse the 1.5-mile course. Unit physical training leaders should all be present to lead their respective squadrons.

"Colonel Clark and I planned out the route," said Mr. O'Neal. "Runners will leave the fitness center and run to J Street, take a right on First Street West to H Street, take another right on Fifth Street West, and end back at the fitness center."

All units will be required to provide a guidon bearer to carry their respective guidon through the run. All Airmen will be expected to be in the proper physical fitness uniform in accordance with group or squadron guidance, said Mr. O'Neal.

Running cadences, or "jodie calls," are a military tradition used as a morale-building, motivational tool. As an added incentive to the run, the most motivated unit will be selected and presented the Spirit Award from Colonel Clark.

Following the run, units will assemble at Grater Field for refreshments and hot and cold beverages. Colonel Clark will give closing comments and present the Spirit Award. Following the award presentation, all personnel will be dismissed.

Once released, personnel who live 10 miles or less from base will be given an hour and a half to go home, shower, and return to work. On-base residents should shower in their quarters, to reduce bogging down the showers at the fitness center.

Each unit has designated parking areas for the event. Fifth group, 12 Operations Group and squadron personnel will park in the lots around the 562nd and 563rd Flying Training Squadrons. Navigator students are encouraged to carpool. 12th Mission Support Group will park behind Building 975, west of the fitness center and spaces east of Building 990. Medical personnel will be transported to and from the clinic in buses. All others can park in the lot between Grater and Rambler Fields. Personnel should not park in front of the fitness center.
