Randolph to test SMART gate

By Gabriel Myers 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

Construction to install a new security system at the main gate began Tuesday and is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.

The new security system, called SMART gate, is a proof of concept security enhancement device designed to efficiently increase traffic flow onto the base. It will electronically check the credentials of persons entering the gate, providing a greater degree of security.

Bob Vickers, 12th Security Forces Squadron Installation Security chief, said initially, construction will be done during non-peak traffic hours at night and early evening, but as construction efforts progress, some work will be done during daylight hours.

"Traffic during peak hours, morning and lunch, should not be affected. The base populace is reminded that all Randolph gates will be open in the morning for business as usual," he said. "When construction is occurring, only inbound lanes will be affected and only one lane at a time will be closed to work on the project."

The SMART gate design concept calls for identification cards to be immediately processed through automated systems that rapidly identify persons who are authorized or not authorized to enter the installation, according to Mr. Vickers.

Randolph will be the first operational base to test the concept of the system.

"We are asking people to be patient and please be aware of the traffic control devices and guards," Mr. Vickers said. "They will be directing people which lanes to use so we can ensure movement through the gate is safe and efficient."
