Warhawks fall to SAC in varsity hoops

By Tony Perez 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The Lackland AFB Women's Varsity Basketball Team was in action on Feb. 16 against a tough San Antonio College team.

Warhawks small forward Kim Greene hit a 3-pointer from the baseline to put Lackland up 3-0 to start the game, but soon they would surrender the lead and never get it back, losing 83-58 at the Chaparral Fitness Center.

Both teams started slow, but SAC switched to a man-to-man defense and the Warhawks had to claw out of a huge deficit, as they trailed 26-5 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.

The Warhawks used a time-out to mount a ferocious comeback and cut SAC's lead to eight points with less than two minutes left in the first half. Lackland trailed 31-41 at intermission.

Lackland was not able to build on the momentum they had gained at the beginning of the second half. Careless turnovers and numerous second-chance points erased their hard work.

With 10 minutes left in the second half, the Warhawks were down 20 points.

Every time Lackland made an offensive push, they gave up a rebound and surrendered an easy layup, causing frustration among the players.

Shooting guard Lekaya Land scored a team high 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Land hit a 3-point shot off the dribble in the second half 30 feet away from the basket, for the most dramatic play of the game.

Point guard Latanya Dismuke chipped in 13 points and power forward LaShana Rivers added 11 points, eight of which occurred in the first half of play. Rivers fouled out with four minutes to go in the second half.
