37th LRS squeezes by 690th ALIS, 17-15

By Tony Perez 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The 37th Logistics Readiness Squadron needed three runs and an extra inning of play to defeat the 690th Alteration and Installation Squadron, 17-15, April 1 during the opening week of intramural softball play.

Shortstop Dale Back brought in left fielder Adrian Simtal and second baseman Shane Dalky on a hit to left field to take a 16-14 lead. Back was then brought in on a single by third baseman Troy Mangum.

Dalky, Back and Mangum all scored three runs in the game. Pitcher Luis Lozan also scored three runs in the game.

690th ALIS still had a shot to win the game, but they only managed to bring home second baseman Sergio Avendando, leaving one man stranded on base.

The game looked to be a blowout early as 690th ALIS scored five runs in the second inning to take a 3-7 lead, going into the third inning.

Catcher Paul Jones, extra hitter Pat Torres, pitcher Mike Trevino, third baseman Josh Wessling and right fielder Greg Rupenkopp also scored in the innings.

37th LRS rattled off 10 runs in two innings, bringing in five batters each in the fifth and sixth inning.

Dalky, Back, Mangum, Lozan and right fielder Jack Carroll all scored in the fifth inning, giving 37th LRS a 9-8 lead. It was their first lead of the game since they led 3-0 in the first inning.

Right-center fielder Troy Baird and left fielder Bill Cox responded for the 690th ALIS, scoring runs, and giving them a 10-8 lead.

The 37th LRS batting lineup stayed hot as Back, Mangum, Lozan, Carroll and left-center fielder Blair Brokintin all scored again in the sixth inning.

With a 14-10 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, it seemed that 37th LRS had the game wrapped up.

However, with time running out in regulation, 690th ALIS scored the four runs necessary to tie the game.

Trevino, Wessling, shortstop Joey Ward and center fielder Tuan Bui all scored to force the extra inning.

Both teams showed rust in their first game of the season.

Several field errors led to the explosive scoring throughout the game.
