LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
Driving around base, one may be curious on what is being built behind the brown fabric construction fences.
One project is the new communications building northwest of the 37th Mission Support Group's Bldg. 1000.
Construction on this $12.8 million communications building started earlier this year and is scheduled to be completed next January.
This project consolidates communications functions currently located on Port San Antonio, formerly known as KellyUSA, next to the main communications hub for Lackland AFB.
There is extensive site work in progress to establish drainage and make utility connections. There will be several outages for all utilities in the area around the construction.
This will also result in road closures in the area at various times. All of these outages and closures will be coordinated to have the least possible impact on traffic and operations.
The second project is air conditioning and heating repair at the basic military training chapel.
The fenced area is for the contractor's material and equipment. The actual work is inside the building.
Work started in December and is scheduled to be complete by November.
The chaplain's office has vacated the administrative areas of the facility for the duration of the project to make room for construction activities.
Fortunately, the engineer and the chaplains were able to work out a plan to keep the sanctuary open for the duration of the project so that Sunday worship services can continue.
