Military Saves week helps Airmen build wealth, not debt

By Staff Sgt. Beth Del Vecchio 12 Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

Just in time to give military members and their families some piece of mind during recent talks of an economic crisis, the Randolph Airman and Family Readiness Flight is offering a week of financial education centered on saving.

Starting Sunday through March 1, the Randolph community is encouraged to attend workshops on investing and Veteran Affairs home loans or set up an appointment with Wendy Warner, A&FRF community readiness consultant, to establish a spending plan to bolster savings.

The A&FRF is offering Military Saves week events as part of a Department of Defense-wide campaign. According to www.militarysaves.org, the official site for the campaign, the goal is to get the entire military community to come together and focus on financial readiness and the importance of saving, debt-reduction and building wealth over time.

"Financial stability is about a lot more than knowledge, it takes consistent action over time," said Ms. Warner. "Most of us do better when we have a supportive environment and Military Saves is a campaign to make every military community a supportive environment."

If Airmen are not available to attend the workshops during Military Saves week, they can make an appointment for a one-on-one brief with the staff at the Airman and Family Readiness Center on the basics of the campaign.

Airmen and their family members can also visit www.militarysaves.org for information on the campaign and tips for saving and reducing debt. Members of the Web site can take the "saver pledge," with which they promise to become fiscally responsible by saving money, reducing debt, building wealth and encouraging others to do the same. Also after taking the pledge, one will receive supportive tips from the Military Saves staff.

Ms. Warner said the events of the week and the Web site offer a true community effort.

"The more knowledge you have on financial opportunities the better choices you can make for your future," she said. "The time to start planning for your future is now - let's offer support to each other to be financially solvent."

The A&FRF hosts a Basic Investments workshop Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to noon in Building 693 and a VA home loan workshop Feb. 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., also in Building 693.
