RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
The 12th Medical Group #2 intramural basketball team performed surgery on the 12th Communication Squadron team Wednesday, securing a 53-24 win over their rivals.
In what was a clearly lopsided matchup between the medics and communicators, it seemed inevitable from the start that the MDG would emerge victorious.
Only able to score six points in the first half, COMM knew their defense was lacking. The medics' offense seemed to be working like clockwork, despite only having the minimum five players playing that night.
"We really need to work on our defense," said Gabe Hernandez, 12th CS team coach. "They're playing well and we needed to step up and stop their offense."
When the half ended, the medics stood tall with a 34-9 lead.
The next half wouldn't hold any redeeming value for the COMM team. Their efforts wouldn't even allow them to triple their nine points. Barely able to score in the first six minutes of the second half, COMM found themselves, once again, at the mercy of the medics offense.
"We only had five players tonight out of nine," said Ben Taylor, 12th MDG coach. "After our last game we talked about our defense, started hustling and made sure our guys were driving up and down the court. And it didn't hurt that we had some free throws mixed in there."
Never fearing a catch-up, the medics hit multiple three-pointers, half a dozen free throws and even took a chance or two to keep the score more than double their opponents.
The medics pummeled COMM the rest of the second half, allowing only 13 points, ending the game nearly 30 points ahead, 53-24.
