Air Force Club Membership Scholarship Program offers college money to students

By Sean Bowlin 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

It takes more than ambition, good grades and great Scholastic Aptitude Test scores to get into college. It also takes money.

That's why the Air Force Services Agency is announcing the 14th annual Air Force Club Membership Scholarship Program, beginning May 1.

Twenty-five $1,000 scholarships, will be awarded to club members and their families attending or accepted to attend a college or university.

"We want to help club members with the costs of higher education," said Shelta Reese, 12th Services Division marketing director. "It's also a way for the clubs to reward their members."

Ms. Reese said this is an exclusive program only for club members and their families - spouse, son, daughter, and stepchildren are eligible. Grandchildren are also eligible, if they are dependents of the club member.

Applicants for the scholarships must have been accepted by, or must be enrolled in, an accredited college or university for the 2009 fall term, Ms. Reese said. Student enrollment status may involve either undergraduate or graduate curriculum. In addition, applicants must provide a copy of their college or university acceptance letter or latest transcript.

Ms. Reese said awarding of scholarship money is based on a written essay of no more
than 500 words on "The High Cost of Freedom." This requirement is strictly enforced. Essays exceeding 500 words, excluding title, will be disqualified.

Participants' essays must be typed in Microsoft Word 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font, be single-spaced, with double-spacing between paragraphs, on white bond paper and with one-inch top and bottom margins and one and one-quarter inch left and right margins. Essays must be submitted on CD with one hard printed copy to 12th Services Division, Bldg 112, Rm. 207, by July 1.

Final scholarship awards for the upcoming school year will be announced in September, Ms. Reese said.

Application forms may be picked up at the Kendrick Club, Parr O' Club, bowling center, and fitness center or may be obtained from www.afclubs.net. Photocopies are accepted.
