RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
Today is the deadline to sign up for Claymation Camp, the first of four summer mini-camps offered by the 12th Force Support Squadron's Youth Programs division.
During the months of July and August, children will have an opportunity to get off that couch and have some fun by participating in any of the four specialized youth mini-camps.
At Claymation Camp, children ages 9-18 will make a movie using clay and stop-motion photography. The camp is held July 7-10 from 5-6:30 p.m. and cost is $15.
"This camp shows participants the fun side of art and technology that they don't get to learn in school," said Amanda Ozuna, assistant youth sports and fitness director.
During the Thrills and Skills Camp, 9-18 year-olds will venture outdoors to learn about team building, "Ultimate Frisbee" and water polo. The camp runs from July 20-24 and times are 9 a.m. to noon for 9-12 year-olds and 1-4 p.m. for 13-18 year-olds. Cost is $5.
Thrills and Skills is one of two new mini-camps that represent an effort to "go outside the box and offer something we don't normally offer," Ms. Ozuna said.
"Thrills and Skills focuses on team-building activities," she said. "The sports they'll play are water polo, badminton, handball and ultimate Frisbee, but it's more about recreation than competition."
Ball handling, shooting skills and defense drills are the name of the game during Basketball Camp. Children ages 6-12 will learn the fundamentals July 27-31 from 1-4 p.m., and cost is $40.
Girls on the Go, another new mini-camp, offers girls ages 10-14 an opportunity to try their hands (and feet) in a multitude of sports. Cost is $40 and the camp runs Aug. 10-14 from 9 a.m. to noon.
"This camp touches on the basic skills of volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer," Ms. Ozuna said.
She said all the mini-camps allow young people to "let loose" during the summer.
"No previous skills are required, and they get kids active," Ms. Ozuna said.
