RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
The Parr O'Club will soon host another out-of-the-box entertainment event, this one to bring a little humor to the lives of Airmen, their spouses and their children.
Two comedians will perform family-friendly comedy at 7 p.m. in the International Room at Randolph Air Force Base's Parr O'Club on Friday, July 17.
Randolph Clubs general manager Merilyn Gove chose to have a comedy night because she said base club members enjoy programs outside of the regular events like dinners and other forms of entertainment.
"Our Murder Mystery Dinner offered earlier this year was very successful and we wanted to offer another great program," Ms. Gove added.
Ms. Gove said they picked two comics to perform who are clean-cut comedians, Rick Gutierrez and Paul Pappas. They were chosen because they don't use foul language or make racial remarks.
"Being on a government base, we believe in family based entertainment and do not condone humor that does not meet community standards," she said.
Latino comedian Gutierrez, an 18-year show business veteran, is slated to star in an HBO comedy series based on his life and experiences which he talks about in his standup act. His television credits include NBC's "Friday Night Videos," BET's "Comic View" and Showtime's "Latino Laugh Festival."
Mr. Gutierrez said his routine doesn't poke fun at the military life. Instead, his comedy concentrates on "throwback" takes on growing up in the 1960's and 1970s, traditional family values and his outlooks on marriage.
As an eight-year veteran Army operational intelligence specialist, Mr. Gutierrez said he was extremely thankful to be able to entertain the military.
"In the Air Force, you live day-to-day with the possibility of getting called to put your life on the line. Airmen do a lot for this country, things that other people would never do," he said.
Comedian Paul Pappas, a veteran of 20 years military service, and a collection of different jobs since, brings to the stage unique takes on life, love, new cars and world issues from the perspective of a man being dragged into the twenty-first century.
The retired Navy defense information specialist likes to poke fun at the fact that everything he owns is now considered obsolete by modern technical standards.
"I'm a techno-dolt. I resist change and I'm proud of it," he joked.
The event costs $15 for club members or $25 for nonmembers. To encourage patronage, $5 is offered off the prime rib dinner and $1 is offered off all top shelf drinks.
Potential patrons are encouraged to make a reservation early and prepayments are encouraged, since on the night of the event, the price will be $20 for members or $30 for nonmembers.
