P90x workout not for the lazy

By Jose T. Garza III 502nd Air Base Wing OL-A Public Affairs

In Patricia Arroyo's P90x class, there is no doing exercises halfway. You either go all out or get out.

"I'm very mean," Arroyo said about what she expects from her students. "They call me evil because I don't play around."

Courtney Gibb, one of Arroyo's students, said that she always pushes her to the max.

"That's a good thing," she said. "She tells me how to do (exercises) right so I don't hurt my back.

"If you're not doing it right, you are hurting yourself."

The P90x is a complete home fitness system designed to get you in the best shape of your life and is a complete set of workouts on 12 DVDs. It provides a variety of muscle-building, fat-burning workouts that let your body grow and adapt.

Arroyo said if you are not ready to give 100 percent commitment to a healthy lifestyle, don't show up.

"If you come here to kill yourself for 45 minutes, then do and eat whatever, you need to like it, you need to want a change in your life." Gibb has been using the P90x since April, but not consistently due to traveling for her job so it has been "hit and miss but good so far."

Arroyo's greatest reward is seeing the results her students have made after using the P90x.

"I hear someone say 'thank you Patricia you really helped me because I passed my physical training test, you pushed me to do push-ups, pushed me to do pull-ups," she said. "That makes me very happy."

Gibb said her instructor is always there to help and tells her students what they are doing.

The P90x class isn't for people looking for a hobby on their free time. It is for those interested in making changes to their physical appearance.

"You don't come here to get out without sweat," Arroyo said.

Her classes take place on the second floor of the Bennett Fitness Center. For safety reasons, she cannot allow more than 12 people during class.

It is first-come, first-serve. The difference between P90x and any other workout is that a long-term plan has been laid out and different workouts are planned in advance so as not to create boredom.

"It covers everything," she said. "Upper body, lower body, cardio, yoga."

She said you will see positive results within three weeks, even if you are not on a strict diet. Whether you are doing cardio, lifting weights, or utilizing the P90x, you need to be committed to change and "always have a plan."

If anybody inquires whether they should do P90x, Gibb advises people to simply follow Nike's way.

"Just do it," she said. "Even when you can't do it all (exercises), just do it."
