Tuesday is National Night Out

National Night Out on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland is Tuesday, 6-8:30 p.m., at the Balfour Beatty Community Center, 2254 Brian McElroy St.

Coordinated by the 802nd Security Forces Squadron and in conjunction with a state-wide campaign, information and materials will be available on crime prevention, child identification, and drug awareness.

Activities will include a security forces and firefighter vehicle display, a military working dog demonstration, McGruff the Crime Dog and children's games. Balfour Beatty Communities will provide food for the event.

Nationally, last year's NNO campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2011.

"America's Night Out Against Crime" raises awareness for crime and drug prevention, generates support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and sends a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

This is the fifth straight year Lackland has participated in San Antonio's award-winning NNO program. State-wide, Texas moved NNO to the first Tuesday in October with hopes of cooler weather. Nationally, the event is held the first Tuesday in August.
