Joint Base San Antonio fire officials promote spring cleaning safety

By Summer Shuler 502d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

As temperatures rise and days grow longer, many residents across Joint Base San Antonio are turning their attention to spring cleaning projects around the home. While the seasonal shift often brings motivation to refresh living spaces, fire officials are urging the community to keep safety top of mind.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, simple tasks like yard work, painting and equipment maintenance can pose unexpected fire risks if not handled properly. From the use of gasoline to clearing debris, small precautions can make a significant difference.

“Spring cleaning is a great time to reset your home, but it’s also when we see an increase in preventable hazards,” said Marcus Armstrong, JBSA-Randolph Fire Protection Inspector. “Taking a few extra steps to handle materials safely and maintain equipment can go a long way in protecting your home and family.”

Fire officials recommend the following safety tips as you tackle seasonal projects:

  • Use and store gasoline properly:
Only use gasoline as motor fuel and store it in approved containers outside of living spaces. Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent.
  • Use flammable liquids safely:
Keep liquids in original containers, tightly sealed, and away from open flames. Never smoke while using them.
  • Inspect grills before use:
Ensure grills are clean and free of grease buildup, nests or debris. Check propane hoses for leaks before firing up for the season.
  • Keep debris away from your home:
Clear leaves, branches and pine needles from roofs, gutters and around the home. Move woodpiles and other combustible materials at least 30 feet away to reduce fire risk.
  • Maintain your clothes dryer:
Check that vents are clear and functioning properly, and keep combustible materials away from the unit. Clothing exposed to flammable substances should be dried outdoors before washing.

Armstrong emphasized that awareness is often the strongest defense. “Most of these risks are easy to prevent once people know what to look for,” he said. “It really comes down to slowing down and being intentional with these routine tasks.”
