JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this year’s theme is “We are Stronger Together, Connect to Protect.”
Across our Joint Base San Antonio community, we pause to reaffirm a vital truth: every life matters.
Whether Soldier, Airman, Sailor, Marine, civilian, or family member, we are bound by service, sacrifice, and the strength we find in each other.
Every life lost to a suicide is tragic, but together we can make a real difference. Building bonds with the people around us, even by simple gestures and friendly comments, are important, and can sustain people in the face of adversity.
This year’s observance reminds us that:
- Checking in with one another can make all the difference.
- Asking directly about someone’s well-being shows courage, not intrusion.
- Knowing available resources—on base and in the community equips us to respond when it matters most.
- Seeking help is not a weakness; it is a sign of resilience and readiness.
Research indicates that connectedness is a factor that can reduce the likelihood someone will consider or attempt suicide. Social connections that individuals can count on and a sense of belongingness can be protective factors against suicide.
Let’s foster connection, build resilience, and take care of ourselves and each other. I urge you to engage — not just for your own well-being, but for the good of your family, friends, team, unit, and our mission. Continue to lead with empathy, act with integrity, and live out a culture of nonjudgemental support for one another.
Whether you are a Soldier, Sailor, Marine, or Airman, there are resources available to you here at JBSA at https://www.jbsa.mil/Resources/Resiliency/JBSA-Suicide-Prevention-Program/.
