JBSA facility managers need to be ready for possible freezing temperatures

502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

To prepare for possible freezing temperatures in San Antonio this week, Joint Base San Antonio facility managers should take some recommended actions to ready their facilities, according to Chad Bertagnoli, Chief Integration Officer, 502nd Civil Engineer Squadron.

  1. Assess your facility / facilities inside and out, before, during, and after this weather event to determine potential risk, and any damage due to the storm.
  1. Check your shelter-in-place kit for blankets and/or other cold weather tools.
  1. Report any damages such as fallen trees, large broken limbs, or downed power lines.  CAUTION:  If you encounter a downed powerline, stay away, and call the fire department immediately.
  1. Ensure all exposed waterlines are insulated from the cold using split foam tubes, allow faucets to drip to prevent waterlines from freezing.  Pay close attention to areas / waterlines that have frozen in the past.
  1. Damage to your facility may not be apparent until after ice forms and begins to thaw and the waterlines begin to flow again.
  1. Ensure all gutters are free from debris and not clogged.
  1. Ensure you have enough salt or sand if needed to put on sidewalks for traction.
  1. Ensure all exterior doors and windows are closed.
  1. Look for areas, internal and external, that could use caulking and apply it to keep out cold air.
