Mission Monday: Functional Area Management

Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Public Affairs

It’s Mission Monday. Meet Maj. Joey Deskin, a lead functional area manager and expeditionary training development officer at headquarters Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center.

He provides oversight to the deployment tasking process for personnel and equipment unit type codes to meet expeditionary requirements worldwide while shaping training requirements to ensure Airmen are prepared for the missions asked of them.

We asked the Floresville, Texas, native to tell us about himself and the work he does for the Department of the Air Force.

What do you love about your job?
The leadership opportunities and daily challenges it presents.

When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
Knowing that our logistical support directly contributes to mission success.  And, I’m motivated knowing that I have a direct impact on the deployed mission.

Why are you and your team important to the Air Force and Space Force enterprise and your customers?
My team and I are crucial for ensuring mission readiness support, making us indispensable.

Describe a project or event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment:
Prior to joining AFIMSC, I served with U.S. European Command Logistics where I played a key role in the supply of munitions to Ukraine. During my tenure at AFIMSC, I've had the privilege of working closely with headquarters Air Force on the development of readiness training for the new Air Task Force elements.

How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities?
Our work enhances readiness and resilience, aligning with AFIMSC's priorities. You may have heard of the “Great Power Competition.” Our work ensuring Airmen are ready, available and deployed on time is where the rubber meets the road. Our Airmen are the superpower delivering air power for America.

Is there anything else you’d like to add that might help people understand the importance of what you do for the DAF?
Recognize that the new AFIMSC A35 Functional Management and Readiness Support Division is the backbone of mission success, and our dedication ensures the Air Force can respond to any challenge effectively.
